Our Microsoft Copilot review
Microsoft Copilot earns its place in the AI chat assistants shortlist for email drafting, provided expensive per seat is not a dealbreaker.
We score Microsoft Copilot 4.3 out of 5 — strong ease of use, solid performance and solid value for money.
What Microsoft Copilot is
Microsoft Copilot is Microsoft's AI chat assistants product, launched in 2023. AI woven through Windows, Edge and Microsoft 365 with document, email and meeting assistance.
It is aimed at beginner users — the learning curve is gentle. Day one you would use it for email drafting, excel formulas and meeting summaries. It runs on Windows, Web, iOS and Android, including a mobile app, and there is no public API.
Where it shines
In testing against the rest of the category, two things stand out: best for Microsoft shops and meeting notes are excellent. The feature set behind that is word/Excel/Outlook assist, teams meeting recaps and windows integration.
We rate performance 4.3/5 and answer accuracy around 88% for the tasks in this category, which is why it holds up for email drafting and excel formulas.
Where it falls short
Where it frustrated us: expensive per seat and weaker standalone chat.
Nothing here needs training, so the risk is not difficulty — it is paying for capability you never use.
Pricing and value for money
Pricing is Free · M365 Copilot $30/user/mo. At $30 a month that is $360 a year per person, at the expensive end of its category (the category median is about $20). A free tier exists, so you can test it properly before paying.
If budget is the constraint, ChatGPT at $20/mo does much of the same work. Our cost calculator will show what adding Microsoft Copilot does to your monthly stack before you commit.
Who should use Microsoft Copilot
Microsoft Copilot is the right call for email drafting, excel formulas and meeting summaries. Skip it if expensive per seat is a bigger problem for you than best for Microsoft shops is a benefit.
The alternatives worth comparing are ChatGPT ($20/mo) and Gemini ($20/mo). Put them side by side before you buy.
Worth a trial: Microsoft Copilot at $30/mo is best used for email drafting and excel formulas, and it earns 4.3/5 from us.
