Our PlayHT review
PlayHT earns its place in the AI voice tools shortlist for voice agents, provided pricier for casual use is not a dealbreaker.
We score PlayHT 4.1 out of 5 — solid ease of use, strong performance and solid value for money.
What PlayHT is
PlayHT is PlayAI's AI voice tools product, launched in 2016. Low-latency conversational voice models and TTS API for products and agents.
It is aimed at intermediate users — the learning curve is moderate. Day one you would use it for voice agents, podcasts and IVR. It runs on Web and API, with no mobile app, and there is an API if you want it inside your own systems.
Where it shines
In testing against the rest of the category, two things stand out: very low latency and developer friendly. The feature set behind that is realtime voice API, voice cloning and podcast tools.
We rate performance 4.5/5 and answer accuracy around 88% for the tasks in this category, which is why it holds up for voice agents and podcasts.
Where it falls short
Where it frustrated us: pricier for casual use.
Expect a real ramp-up — we rate the learning curve moderate. Budget time for it before judging the tool.
Pricing and value for money
Pricing is Free trial · Creator $39/mo. At $39 a month that is $468 a year per person, at the expensive end of its category (the category median is about $22). A free tier exists, so you can test it properly before paying.
If budget is the constraint, ElevenLabs at $22/mo does much of the same work. Our cost calculator will show what adding PlayHT does to your monthly stack before you commit.
Who should use PlayHT
PlayHT is the right call for voice agents, podcasts and IVR. Skip it if pricier for casual use is a bigger problem for you than very low latency is a benefit.
The alternatives worth comparing are ElevenLabs ($22/mo) and Murf AI ($29/mo). Put them side by side before you buy.
Worth a trial: PlayHT at $39/mo is best used for voice agents and podcasts, and it earns 4.1/5 from us.
